Vol. 57: Sogetsu Summer Seminar 2012 Part 1
The height of summer has arrived! In the scorching heat, the annual Summer Seminar started today at the Sogetsu Kaikan.
A variety of classes by eight instructors in the various fields of plastic arts including ikebana are being held daily throughout the three-day period using the whole facilities of the Sogetsu Kaikan. All the classes are to be completed within one day and in total about 600 Sogetsu members will participate over the three days. These are study sessions to enjoy the act of creating to the full, while using the hands and the whole body, and mutually stimulating the senses with other people.
Mr. Fumio Ichimura, an instructor of the Plastic Arts Course at Sogetsu School Osaka
His theme is “Growing Shape - The World Created with Wool.”
Wool was felted and a unique form was born.
Mr. Masahiko Tsubota, an instructor of the Plastic Arts Course at Sogetsu School Osaka
The participants are learning “monotype,” an expression created by painting on an acrylic board with colors and transferring it to paper by pressing the paper onto the board with their hands.
By creating numerous sheets, they can gradually form their own styles.
Mr. Kiyoyuki Kato, known for his ceramic classes at the Headquarters
The participants are creating flower containers under the theme of “Finding Your Shape with Clay.”
Each participant’s individuality is shown in the feel that only clay has.
The class of Mr. Iccho Kuboshima, Master Instructor of the Sogetsu Headquarters, tries “To Weave.”
Using a simplified weaving machine, plants are woven into yarn to create works.
Encounters between plants and yarn are expressed in a manner full of individuality.
In the limited time, all of the participants concentrated on their creation with looks of true pleasure.
The result I got today …
I created this in Mr. Ichimura’s wool class. This was inspired by a large tree that I saw in Hawaii.
The rest of the four classes will be reported tomorrow! Don’t miss it!
