Vol. 67: Tokyo West Branch Exhibition & Hana no Omotenashi

The Tokyo West Branch Exhibition started today at the Tachikawa Takashimaya Department Store. The title is Hanano Hikari (Flower Light), suitable for this balmy season. I created the large bamboo installation at the open air ceiling entrance on the first floor.

Since I set up my work in public during the store hours, some customers stopped to look at my creation out of curiosity. There were even people who asked, "Are they real?" They thought that the bamboos I used were artificial. Actually, it might be quite difficult to see such grand and beautiful bamboos somewhere else.

The framework was constructed using straight bamboos and then bamboo bands, made of eight divided pieces, were fixed.

Securing the springy split bamboos required 3 to 4 people's muscles.

As a final touch, I added straight bamboos...

It's done! I simply expressed an uplifting feeling and the power of spring.

At the branch exhibition site on the 8th floor, spring was in full bloom.

The Tokyo West Branch exhibition is known for these miniature exhibits in these little windows!

A breath of the spring filled the entire site. Please come to the exhibition with your friends and family!

The Iemoto's work is displayed at the entrance lobby on the first floor.

Hana no Omotenashi (Flowering Welcomes), which is the annual event in spring, is also in display now at the Nihombashi Takashimaya Department Store.

The setup was filmed for Suijin, a program of cable TV J:COM. (It will be aired in May. Watch it if you have time.)

I used double-petaled cherry which will be the best time to view and...

Splendid tall rhododendrons and...

Camellias and azaleas...

Then, the work was completed by adding bamboos as a finishing touch.

I created it so that the front and back had different looks.

The installation will welcome you with the pinkish spring colors. Please also enjoy this work!
