Bamboo and stone, basic elements of building in both East and West, confront each other - without there being any possibility of equivalence - in a perspective that is deceptively charming. Thus, the rows of classical statues and columns that were not obliterated reveal a story of destruction; but the most fascinating vistas through the openings in the great structure of bamboo are of its own gentle curves and sharp bends, and they do not appear to open onto other, more distant horizons.
