Lesson FAQ

Q.
How do I choose a class?
A.

All Sogetsu Ikebana teachers throughout the world use the same textbooks made up of four curricula. Each teacher, however, conducts classes with his/her original ideas added. Many of the classes welcome visitors for trial lessons (with or without the fee). It is recommended to visit as many of them as possible to find out the one that most suits you. It is also an idea to decide which classes to visit from the teachers who exhibited the works you liked most in ikebana exhibitions.

Q.
Do students take lessons sitting on the floor Japanese style?
A.

Most of the classrooms at culture schools have desks and chairs as the classrooms in Sogetsu Headquarters Building do. Although some classes use Japanese-style rooms, wearing comfortable clothes for arranging flowers is advised.

Q.
How are the class system and the fees?
A.

In principle, students pay a fee for three lessons each month. Some teachers also conduct special classes to meet the various needs of their students. Please make sure to clarify your class system and the fee before signing up.

Q.
When is the right time to start taking lessons?
A.

Any time is the right time to start taking lessons. In ikebana lessons, plants and flowers of the season are used as materials and, therefore, students can enjoy studying at any time of the year. Students from 3 years old to the 90’s are all studying at their own pace. When getting interested in taking ikebana lessons is the best timing for starting it. Ikebana classes for children (from the age of 3) are regularly held at Sogetsu Headquarters.

Q.
Can I study the traditional ikebana in Sogetsu School?

You can borrow all the items required for lessons. It might be a good idea to purchase the tools which you find easy to use gradually.

Q.

Sogetsu School does not recommend it.
