Iemoto Interview My style 37 Guest: Kanda Hakuzan, Kanda Umenojo

“The Iemoto Interview” series showcases engaging conversations between the Iemoto and notable figures from diverse fields, exploring their unique approaches. The thirty-seventh guest is Kanda Hakuzan, a leading figure in the world of kodan storytelling, together with his foremost disciple Umenojo, who was recently promoted to futatsume rank. Following Hakuzan’s powerful performance of a shortened version of Ogi no Mato, the Iemoto created a welcoming floral arrangement for the two guests. From their respective perspectives, they spoke about “the forms of succession,” discussing subjects such as the master-disciple relationship << within the Japanese storytelling tradition.

Teshigahara Akane Arranges Flowers at Turandot Garyukyo

Nestled along a quiet back street in Akasaka, Turandot Garyukyo is a grand maison of Chinese cuisine. The interior is filled with antique furniture and artworks personally selected by Chef Yuji Wakiya, creating a warm atmosphere that feels as though one has been invited into a private home. The Iemoto frequently visits this beloved restaurant to enjoy exceptional cuisine with cherished guests. As an expression of gratitude to this much-loved place, the Iemoto created a summer floral arrangement especially for the occasion.

Displaying Houseplants the Ikebana Way

This is a new proposal from Sogetsu: using houseplants themselves as ikebana materials and arranging them freely and creatively. Today, houseplants can be found in all kinds of spaces and have become firmly established as part of interior décor. Rather than simply placing them in a room, this approach transforms them into ikebana displays through Sogetsu-style ingenuity. This time, imagining a café space, we created a lively and uplifting environment.
