Planting a Flower of Love on Taiwan’s Northeastern Coast
Sogetsu 100 : Flower Education at Fulian Primary School
On Taiwan’s northeastern coast, a small school nestled between the mountains and the sea became the setting for a heartwarming encounter with the art of Ikebana. With just eight students, Fulian Primary School welcomed floral art instructors from the Sogetsu Soxiu Branch for a creative workshop celebrating the approaching centenary of the Sogetsu School in 2027.
Under the theme “Sogetsu 100: Flower Education at Fulian,” the initiative brought together floral art, environmental awareness, and aesthetic education, offering children an opportunity to discover the beauty of natural materials and the freedom of artistic expression.
Inspired by the concept of “Giving Discarded Materials a New Bloom,” the children created floral arrangements using driftwood picked up along the seashore, fresh flowers, foliage, and reusable materials. From observing the unique shapes and textures of the driftwood to selecting floral materials and exploring line, color, and form, the children took an active role in every stage of the creative process.
Through this hands-on experience, they discovered that even weathered wood and everyday discarded materials could be transformed into distinctive works of art. Each arrangement reflected the child’s individual imagination, while embodying the Sogetsu philosophy of creative freedom, innovation, and the exploration of new possibilities beyond conventional forms.
The workshop offered more than an introduction to floral art. It encouraged children to observe nature closely, appreciate the value of materials, and express their ideas with confidence. The concentration on their faces, the joy of completing their creations, and the warmth shared between students and teachers made the experience especially meaningful.
Although Fulian Primary School is small, the care and connection within its community are profound. Through the language of flowers, the Sogetsu Soxiu Branch shared not only the beauty of ikebana but also a message of environmental responsibility, creativity, and compassion.
As Sogetsu approaches its 100th Anniversary in 2027, this initiative reflects the enduring power of Ikebana to connect art with everyday life and bring people together across generations and communities.
On Taiwan’s northeastern coast, a flower of love was planted—not only in the arrangements created that day, but also in the hearts of the children, where the seeds of creativity, appreciation for nature, and artistic curiosity may continue to grow.
